Dr Jim Smith, BG Board Member & Education Chair is also working on education related efforts statewide with the WA State Commission on African American Affairs & Washington State Education Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee.

The Washington State Commission on African American Affairs (CAAA) has nine volunteer commissioners whose individual work advances their mission. As King County Commissioner, Dr. Smith represents the Commission for the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Plan Implementation Committee and the ESSA Effective Educators work group that develops and recommends the state’s education strategies for approval for the State Superintendent, Governor, and Federal Government.  Dr. Smth is also a member of the Mayor of Seattle's Education Summit Advisory Committee, which is finalizing the recommendations to Mayor Murray on strategies for the city and the Seattle School District.

The goal is to improve academic success for students of color with a significant emphasis on African American students.   Dr Smith is also a member of The EOGOAC (Education Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee), a state wide Committee that was the driving force behind the passage of HB 1541. Finally, he is a member of the state wide ELOC (Expanded Learning Opportunity Committee), which is working on creating additional learning opportunities (before school, after school, and during the summer for struggling students).
